Has anyone heard of this artist? Brandi Carlile's pretty good. I saw her open for Jamie Cullum last week. I'm sure you guys know he's great already. Brandi's worth a listen though, her voice is distinct.

Here's a video if you want:

Several Seattle musiciany friends have been recommending Brandi to me for a couple of years now, and I finally listened and bought her album about a month ago. J.H.Christ, what a VOICE. Looking back through journals and such, I realized her name sounded familiar, and that I met her almost 10 years ago when I was living in Seattle.

If you married the offspring of Patsy Cline and Robert Smith, as weird as it sounds, you'd come up with Brandi's voice and style...twangy emotion and real, cutting songwriting. She's a tiny, young woman with a huge voice who is still growing into it, and I can't wait to see what is to come from her going forward. Her debut album was just rereleased this week, and I encourage all of you to look her up.

Just saw this thread.. I've been a fan for a little bit.. yeah she has a really distinct sound. I find her really similar to KT cos she also grew up very secluded to mainstream music. Her family lived out in the country by themselves so she really found her own sound. I just saw her perform for the first time the other day on some late night show.. pretty good. She's very down-to-earth like KT is. Also featured on Grey's Anatomy quite a bit.

Definitely worth a listen.

AND I DID, hehe! Here's my review, cross-posted from the Brandi Carlile board:

Show. Was. *beep*. Awesome.

I took my dad, and he absolutely adored her, which makes me very, very happy.

Let's see, ahhh, sleepy, I got to meet Trish, and she was nice enough to take a pic of Brandi and I b/c I used up all my film taking pix.

I am just blown away at how charming and talented Brandi is. She was absolutely amazing!!!!!

Setlist-ish (not in order, y'all, I didn't write it down)
the times they are a changing
what can i say (very cute, everyone sang along)
someday never comes
again today
closer to you
throw it all away
fall apart again
cannonball (SO beautiful, damn!!)
my song
creep (AHHH!!! Loved this one - it's so funny/hot to hear her say "And I'm So *beep* sick of this" - the angry lyrics are just really great for her)
the clock
late morning lullaby
folsom prison blues (AHHHH, she rocks this one out!!!!)
brand new song: "sweet josephine take me away" (very pretty!)

Tidbits: She recorded "Fall Apart Again" in Austin after SXSW. She recorded this show for T. Bone Burnett, who wanted to hear the band live, and she told me she leaks all of her live shows, so this one will probably turn up. YAY!!!!!!!

She's recording the album in November, but I guess y'all already knew that.

I guess this show for me can be summed up when I looked back at my dad who'd never heard of her beyond hearing the debut I burned for him - well, I looked back at him during "Folsom Prison Blues" and he looked so freaking happy. He was completely blown away. But, hey, Brandi has that effect on people! Smile

All right, y'all, beddy bye!

AND I got to meet her after the show, and a boardie was sweet enough to take a pic for me. Brandi is just so sweet, and so laid back in person - she went out of her way to meet everyone, because "we were such a great audience." *sigh* I hope she comes back to Austin soon - it was a truly magical evening.

LOL, looking back, it does seem like a long setlist, but her songs are short (like 2-3 minutes tops), so she played for an hour and forty five minutes.

What else, lol? I made a colossal fool out of myself during the meet and greet, lol. I told her how happy I was that she came back to Texas, since the last time she was here, it was sold out. Then I told her how much my dad had enjoyed the show. She wanted to meet him, but he had to leave to go to work the next day, hehe.

And then I asked about the recording, and started talking about live shows and stuff. I even tried to explain BitTorrent to her - lol! Then I just said, "Well you're not very popular so whenever I try and grab a live show, it's not up anymore!" *smacks forehead* LOL! But she like didn't care at all, she understood what I was trying to say, hehe.

At one point, she was like, "picture time?" because Trish was holding a camera, and I was all like, "What time?" - I was totally deaf from sitting next to the speaker all night.

Then I had to go, because I had to figure out I was getting home, and as I was leaving, she called out, "Tell your dad hi from me!"

AHHH! LOL! Looking back, I can't believe we talked about so much stuff, but she's just that cool. Since she's only a few years older than me, I just feel like I'm talking to a friend, not a Rock Star. But she's definitely on her way to being a rock star!

LOL! I'll have to see who else is playing at ACL this year. I've actually never gone - too pricey, not enough artists I like.

Both! But I may be going to Texas State in the fall, which is in San Marcos, a half hour away. I'm also holding out hope for St. Edwards to let me in (and give me money haha) which is in South Austin, a few miles from where I live.
