Huh. I'd have sworn there was already a Wilco thread, but since there ain't, here's one.

Yeah, I could wax rhapsodic about Wilco's long, storied history and all that, but really I'm posting for one reason in particular. Beginning today, Wilco are offering a free stream playing their next album, Wilco (The Album) which is not due out until June 30, at http://wilcoworld.net/discs/thealbum/

It's well worth the listen. Apparently it was recorded at Neil Finn's Roundhead Studios when most of them were in New Zealand for 7 Worlds Collide--with Nels Cline and Mikael Jorgensen adding their parts later back in Chicago--and the fifth cut, "You and I," is a duet with the lovely and talented Ms. Leslie Feist!!!!

Wilco have always been one of those bands who exist in a sort of limbo for me; I don't dislike them, in fact I often like what I've heard, and I keep meaning to dig a bit deeper into their catalogue. But for some reason it never happens, and the CDs of theirs which I do have (the last one and probably a couple of the 90s ones I think) stay more or less unplayed

That's okay, Eric, that's where I was on Radiohead for a long time. But nowadays, The Bends is in high rotation on my iPod, with OK Computer and In Rainbows strong candidates to join it. Some have called Wilco "the American Radiohead," which is more about ethos and creative restlessness than sonic space; you could just as readily call Radiohead "the English Son Volt" I suppose. :-)

I expect they'll be one of those bands who I go back years from now and fully appreciate. Though they're not in any way similar or anything, that's what has happened very recently for me with Cheap Trick. You go back and take in the whole body of work, without the burden of whether it's current or not. It just exists on its own merits.

Wilco are playing live at the Barras...shall I get a ticket?
(3.5 milliseconds later) YES!

Are you a fan Nat? They get a huge reputation for their live shows.
