THE BATTLE OF TAGGART AVENUE (Written December 2004)

I was woken up this morning by the sound of beating drums
I opened up my curtains and saw a Nazi point his gun
So I jumped out of my window and I ran into the street
Down to the horizon ‘til I landed on the beach
I waited for a while ‘til a ship came in to view
Then I yelled out to the captain “Come to Taggart Avenue”

So he sailed in my direction and he anchored off the coast
Stepping out onto the shore with Jacob Marley’s ghost
I told him ‘bout the Nazis and he told me not to fear
“I’ll round up all the men I can and force them out of here”
He shouted out to Marley and he told him what to do
He said “choose your ammunition down on Taggart Avenue”

Now the captain went off searching for all the men that he could find
But the Nazis saw him coming and they shot him from behind
As he lay dying in the gutter with blood gushing from his head
Sources say these were the final words he ever said
“Death to all the Nazis and the Hippie movement too
Come and join the fighting down on Taggart Avenue”

By this time our fleet was growing at a slow and steady rate
Every man who signed the line would sign away their fate
The royals back the rear end up, the public out in front
And somewhere in the middle hid the British Government
How they fought for King and country ‘though they didn’t have a clue
What the hell was going on in Taggart Avenue

I was standing on the corner with a gun in both my hands
When I saw a sign read “Peace on Earth” scrawled upon a van
I walked up to the driver and I knocked upon his door
But he stuck his middle finger up and began to phone the Law
He had blonde hair and sky blue eyes but I told him of the news
“There’s gonna be a riot down on Taggart Avenue

I ran into the alley but I was lost without a map
And the Scotland Yard soon caught me and put my hands behind my back
When they slapped the handcuffs on me well I asked them what I’d done
They said “some one said they saw you in possession of a gun”
“The gun was their for self-defence” They knew that to be true
But they still drove with sirens wailing from Taggart Avenue

By the time they came to sentence me the jury they confessed
That they want’d have me crucified but they had no success
So they abandoned all proceedings and I went back to my cell
Where the jail officers picked on me and made my life a living hell
I could no longer take it, I’m no P.O.W
So I managed to escape and run to Taggart Avenue

When I got back to the fighting it had gone on for a while
And I saw the ghost of Marley but I couldn’t raise a smile
But suddenly he shouted out “there’s a man heading this way
His gun it points towards you and he wants to make you pay”
So I dived behind a taxi while my panic grew and grew
As I watched the men a-dying down on Taggart Avenue

Well I knelt behind the taxi ‘til I seemed it safe to leave
And I ran into the public house and dropped down to my knees
The sweat was dripping from my hair it fell into my eyes
I could no longer make out where my Nazi foes did hide
But I could see a shadow shouting out the orders to his crew
“Abandon all equipment down on Taggart Avenue”

By the time the war was over I was twenty-three years young
The Nazi’s had been driven out, the natives we had one
But me I didn’t celebrate, don’t ever ask me why
Cos I’ll just sit and stare at you my lips they won’t reply
But then again, if I only could I might just say to you
“I lost my friends and family down on Taggart Avenue”

Phew!

another little ditty from my collection, short sharp n sweet

Loves goodbye

Part of my heart and soul has now gone and died,
I shall cherish the times we had and the love we shared.
I will remember the times that we laughed and the times we cried,
But most of all the passion that you showed me shall never be compared.

i wrote it myself. Inspired by Bob Dylan's 115th Dream.

Taggart Avenue is the road on which my uni is located, in Liverpool

All the poems I've posted so far have been original.

Thanks for the positive comments. I have a few poems that are slightly more personal than the stuff I've posted. I might post them another time.
