Absolutely awful....it does make you think about mortality.

You remember the days at Leeds where he was labelled "gypo" because of his long hair (cultured people them White Men!), a great midfielder during Sir Bob's reign at Newcastle and of course holding a record with Ryan Giggs as the only player to have scored in every Premier League season (until he dropped down to play with Sheff Utd).

Shame - he seemed to be galvanising the Welsh team for the first time in a long while.

The question is WHY?...you have to feel so sad for his wife and boys..just dreadful..lets hope he left a letter for them or something..just tragic.

I think the "why?" factor is the most shocking...I'm just lost for words. I couldn't bear to watch any football yesterday, or today.

To leave a young family behind, there had to be a reason to suddenly do something like that. I can't imagine what it was, and maybe nobody will ever really know, but it's awful :smt009

They might never know why he did it :( Maybe it was depression and he just hid it well. There's an inquest this afternoon.

The one good thing to come out of this is a number of players have contacted the Sporting Chance Clinic asking for help.

And after 1 day, it's been adjourned to the end of January!? :?

This is the 2nd high-profile suicide by a (former) international sportsman this month; ex-England cricketer Peter Roebuck jumped out of a hotel window in South Africa while working in his role as senior cricket correspondant for the Australian Test side. His sudden suicide was put down to some police enquiries over allegations of improper behaviour towards young male cricketers (an officer was in his room at the time he flipped); but obviously as far as we know there was nothing in Gary Speed's life which would have driven him to do what he did without warning. He did seem to have a quite melancholic air about him (the intense, dark features) but something obviously happened on Saturday night that has yet to surface.

It's just so gut-wrenchingly sad.

On a lighter note..nice to see the MIGHTY HAMMERS, winning a lot even though they haven't really hit top form yet...Big Fat Sam is the MAN...what could have been if our board had had the balls to have sacked that useless talentless git Grant and appointed Sam...

City had a very tough group, and ended up with the most points without qualifying in years, apparently, so not too much shame in that (although they still should have got through with the players we have!) Still, I'll take Europa League action, FA Cup holders, Carling Cup semis, and top of the Premiership :mrg: :p

As for United, first that 6-1 defeat to City at home, then losing to Palace at home, and now this :smt005

UEFA aren't going to look into the Lyon/Zagreb game, even though it's obvious the 7-1 result was a fix  So what if the "betting pattrens" didn't flag up anything dubious? That doesn't mean the clubs involved are not involved in anything :smt018 At least the French FA are treating it with suspicion.

Did you lose at Reading? I've not checked the results this weekend yet, but did notice the Hammers were coming to the Madjeski on Saturday. No doubt the town centre was teeming with lairy East London types :mrg:

Another abject surrender by The Villa yesterday....glad I was in the kitchen and only hear the telly in the background rather than being subjected to watching the nightmare.

Apparently we are signing Keith Andrews....on loan to Ipswich from Blackburn....no disrespect to him but that's not the quality we need to take us back up the league.

Feckin' clueless! We'll be lucky to get a point from the next three games so will be well and truly sucked into the relegation battle by new year!

Bugger off... ..but normal service was resumed against the nighty Barnsley..went to that, over 35000 there, and we should have had 5 or 6 to be honest. The ref was a complete hand job..missed two blatant penalties...and we were missing 8 first team regulars..blimey we had Henry Lansbury, playing right back when he came on!!!
